Dead Guy Ale… Maibock (4.5)
I had a bit of time on a Friday afternoon and one of my favorite bars was open for day drinking, Lot 6. (Click here to see my review) Lot 6 is a great place with great people. I would suggest you get by and see them ASAP if you are in the area. One reason I went was because the owner posted that she had some new beers on the menu. I tried one of those, Abita’s Purple Haze. (click here to see review) After that I went back to an old standby, Rogue’s Dead Guy Ale.
From the Brewery…
The following is how Rogue describes the beer they have crafted:
FOOD PAIRING: Spicy, Pork”
For a beer in Oklahoma an ABV of 6.5% is pretty high. The IBUs of 40 also adds good flavor to the mix. The beer has won many awards over the past 20 years.
This is one of my fall back beers when available. I really like the Ale and could drink many in a night. I don’t know if it was just my nose this night, but I did not find it to have a strong nose prior to tasting. There was some subtle hop nose coming from the beer.
Tasting provides the flavor of a robust malt flavor with a great hop finish. As you breath out after taking a drink the long-lasting hop flavor/smell finally hits home and finishes the taste in a fantastic way. Not quite the bitter finish of an IPA, more of a well hopped ale. To me the hoppy finish lasted longer than the time on the tongue and this adds to the enjoyment of the beer.
It has a great mouth feel of a rich tasting beer with good carbonation. The balance of malt taste with the hop finish makes this one of the better beers I have had in a long time. As the beer warms up in the mouth more flavor comes out.
I rate this beer 4.5 out of 5. It is one of my favorite beers and I will drinking it again and again when available, or once I am done tasting something new.
